Remarks by Jim O'Donnell, President BMW of North America, LLC
The global and US auto markets will rebound. But what will be the role of the premium automakers in this new and reconstituted world? It is the belief and commitment of the BMW Group that the premium market – and the BMW Group as the leader of this segment – will continue to fill an important and necessary role of bringing innovation and technology to market first, to meet customer, social and regulatory needs and provide direction for the entire industry. Premium companies also have a particular responsibility to give back to the communities in which they do business, contributing to the US economy and demonstrating a long standing commitment to investment in America.

The question all marketers are asking will be explored in this module: Will consumers – rocked by the implosion and avoidance of spending – go back to the way they were once the economy recovers again? The presentation will explain how both external events and internal social pressures are about to create changes the way consumers see the world, the marketplace, and premium products. You will also learn – just as this changing climate creates marketplace losers – it also clears a fresh path for marketplace winners. The trick to finding the winning way, of course, is reading the signs.
Presentation and discussion with John DeCicco, University of Michigan; Tom Baloga, Vice President, Engineering BMW NA; Axel Rose, Manager, Fuel Economy and CO2 Systems Engineering, BMW Group
This module will discuss the success of past and current government fuel policies in curbing car related CO2 emissions. We will take a close look at the proposed national emission standards for 2012-2016 and also how a cap and trade policy would interact with the car industry. Further, the presentation will give an overview of the role of global warming pollution from cars and the development of car related CO2 emissions since 1990.
